Phase I: Gathering the Fiber
How much fiber is required for a motif?
The amount of fiber needed depends on the scale of the motif you select to ensure a dense, beautifully textured integration. Each motif listing provides the specific average amount of fiber required.
A Note on Short-Haired Companions: If your companion has a smooth or short coat (such as a Pitbull, Chihuahua, or similar breeds), we can absolutely still weave their memory. We will delicately incorporate their hair with raw Merino wool in a matching tone, ensuring that every companion, regardless of coat type, can stay with you on this journey.
What if I do not have enough fiber for the motif I desire?
If your beloved companion has passed and you possess only a delicate clipping or a small amount of brushings, please know that we can still entirely honor your vision. If you desire a large motif but lack the required amount of fiber, it is not a problem. Our artisans will use their creativity to thoughtfully blend your companion’s precious fiber with natural, raw Merino wool. This allows us to craft the grand scale of the artwork you envision while ensuring their unique essence remains deeply and permanently woven within the piece.
What type of fiber can be used?
Any kind of collected fiber from your companion can be used. We do not require you to wash the fiber before sending it; leaving it in its natural state beautifully preserves the true essence of your companion. However, if you prefer, you may simply leave us a note at checkout, and our artisans will gently cleanse the fiber with a mild, natural soap prior to construction.
Can I combine the fiber of multiple companions?
Yes, fiber from two or more companions can be beautifully blended into a single motif. While we recommend packaging each companion’s fiber separately so our artisans can thoughtfully compose the artwork, it is not strictly required.
Phase II: The Commission Process
How do I place my order?
Because each piece is entirely bespoke, commissioning your garment is a guided, two-step journey:

Choose Your Canvas: First, select your preferred Foundation garment (such as our traceable Italian cashmere sweaters, cardigans, or heritage wool beanies) and add it to your cart.

Choose Your Memory: Next, navigate to the Motifs section. Select your desired artwork, enter the name of the companion whose fiber will be woven into the motif, and add it to your cart alongside your Foundation.
Can I commission a custom motif shape not listed in the collection?
Absolutely. If you are envisioning a unique shape or design not listed in our standard collection, we would be honored to bring it to life. Please email our atelier directly (atelier@lookingfriday.com) instead of adding a standard motif to your cart. We will discuss your vision, fiber requirements, and provide a bespoke quote.
Phase III: Safe Passage
How should I package the fiber?
Please place the collected fiber securely in a sealed paper envelope or a ziplock bag. Be sure to include a small note inside with your companion's name so we can keep their identity connected to their fiber from the moment it arrives in our hands.
Where do I ship my companion's fiber?
Because this is a deeply meaningful commission, we handle each order with individual care. Once your commission is placed, our team will personally reach out to you via email to coordinate the details and provide the exact atelier address where you can safely send your companion's fiber.
Will I receive any unused fiber back?
Yes, absolutely. Because every companion's fiber has a unique texture and weight, we will use only what is needed to perfect the artwork. Any remaining fiber will be carefully packaged and safely returned to you alongside your finished garment.
Phase IV: The Atelier Timeline
How long does the integration process take?
The hand-crafting of your Foundation garment begins as soon as your order is placed, which takes approximately 3 to 5 weeks. Once your companion's fiber safely arrives at our atelier, the delicate integration process takes an additional 5 to 7 days to complete.
Will I be updated on the progress?
Yes, we believe in keeping you intimately connected to this journey. We will reach out with updates at three key moments: when the hand-knitting of your foundation garment is complete, the moment your companion’s fiber safely arrives in our hands, and finally, when your bespoke piece is finished and ready to begin its journey to you.
Phase V: Caring for Your Garment
How do I wash and care for my finished piece?
To preserve the integrity of both the luxury natural fibers and the bespoke memory motif, we recommend gentle hand washing or professional dry cleaning. Detailed care instructions will be included alongside your finished piece to ensure it remains a lasting sanctuary for a lifetime.
Do you offer mending or fit adjustments?
These garments are carefully crafted to be heirlooms for a lifetime. We understand that as the years pass, bodies change and evolve—and your garment can gracefully change with you, so you never have to worry about outgrowing your sanctuary. Should your piece ever require specialized mending, fit adjustments to accommodate a new season of life, or if you wish to explore upcycling your garment in the future, our atelier remains open to you.
